We got the word "conundrum" from WWII. During the war and just after we invaded the beaches in France we needed a communication line set up with London ASAP. That was a problem in and of itself since the Germans still occupied much of France. What they did was they had these HUGE barrel looking things rolling across the English channel that had HUGE steel cables for the communication wire. Those huge barrels were called, are you ready for this, a "conundrum"!
