Ordering

[edit]

I'm not sure of the best way of ordering this list. The new "alphabetical" ordering isn't really strictly alphabetical; it has families (within each main section -- e.g. flutes, clarinets, oboes within the woodwind section) alphabetically, with specific instruments in each family by pitch. I think this is a bit confusing. The original list seemed to try to keep similar types of instruments together, e.g. flutes, single reeds, double reeds. Roughly speaking, sorted by Hornbostel-Sachs number and then by pitch. But this ordering may be confusing too. Strict alphabetical ordering is a possibility, but I think it's more useful to keep similar instruments together. -- Rsholmes 02:10, 20 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
