Condottiero → Condottiere – The singular form condottiere is more appropriate as the English Wikipedia article title than condottiero because English-language scholarship, dictionaries, and encylopedias overwhelmingly use condottiere (see: Britannica, Oxford Reference, Collins English Dictionary, Concise Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology, etc.) The word entered English as condottiere in the 1790s. The standard English-language monograph on the subject, Michael Mallett's Mercenaries and their Masters: Warfare in Renaissance Italy (1974), consistently uses condottiere as the singular, as do most other scholars.

In Italian language sources, condottiero is more dominant. The authoritative modern Italian dictionary Treccani marks condottiere as the archaic (ant.) form, since it was used in early literary sources interchangeably with -iero depending on dialect, but scholarship in Italian has converged on condottiero. Nonetheless, the English Wikipedia article title should reflect established English usage, regardless of modern Italian usage.
