Unlikely Native to Puerto Rico

As Puerto Rico has been separated from the mainland for a very long time, and likely for a time much longer than the speciation of squirrel monkeys, is it really plausible that they are native to Puerto Rico? Some further digging into references will likely turn up the fact that they are an introduced species from the mainland, maybe as long ago as the indigenous era, or during Spanish colonial times. In fact, the listed references make no mention of Puerto Rico, and all the species and subspecies listed in them refer only to areas on the South American mainland. Tmangray (talk) 14:56, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Updated taxonomy

As a result of taxonomy research since 2009, this species has been split up into several, with S. scuireus limited to the populations in parts of Brazil and the Guianas. If it is not clear which references based on the prior taxonomy refer to S. scuireus as the species is currently understood, it may be necessary to create a new article for S. scuireus under the common name "Guianan squirrel monkey" (which seems to be the widely accepted name now given the restricted range) and turn this article from a species article into a more general article addressing the several species that used to be included within S. scuireus. I encountered a similar situation for the white-fronted capuchin, and left a more extensive discussion of this type of solution on its talk page, although in that situation there is clearly material that applies to what are now considered different species. Going through some of the sources, we have some sources in the article that are explicitly based on studies on Colombian squirrel monkeys, which are no longer included within S. scuireus, and others that are not specific about the locality, so the solution I suggested for the white-fronted capuchin may be necessary here.
