$() syntax

[edit]

Bash-1.14.7, in documentation/features.info, descibes $() as "The Posix and ksh-style $() form of command substitution". I can't find any earlier version to check (1.14.17 was released in 1995, or thereabouts), though $() was introduced to ksh in ksh88 (presumably released in 1988, but I can't find anything with a casual search that states that rather than just implies it by the numbering).
