Netherlands
[edit]The statement "In the Netherlands, "college" is equivalent to HBO (Higher professional education)." is not true. "College", in the Dutch language, refers to any kind of secondary education of a higher form (preparing for university or HBO), mostly used in names, though, or it refers to a specific kind of (Catholic) boarding school. Furthermore it can designate "class"/"course"in the context of university: "Ik moet nu naar college" = "I have to attend class, now." All the other uses are referrals to the Anglosaxon uses of "college" (either a university college "English" style, or and American "college"). Joekiedoe (talk) 14:17, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
Definitions
[edit]College is defined quite differently in this article. How can this be resolved? Sarcelles (talk) 21:13, 15 February 2026 (UTC)
- Quite differently from what? Robminchin (talk) 01:45, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
- The article basically has the following:
- A liberal arts college, an independent institution of higher education focusing on undergraduate education, such as Wellesley College or Amherst College.
- A liberal arts division of a university whose undergraduate program does not otherwise follow a liberal arts model, such as the Yuanpei College at Peking University.
- An institute providing specialised training, such as a college of further education, for example Belfast Metropolitan College, a teacher training college, or an art college.
- A Catholic higher education institute which includes universities, colleges, and other institutions of higher education privately run by the Catholic Church, typically by religious institutes. Those tied to the Holy See are specifically called pontifical universities.
- In the United States, college is sometimes but rarely a synonym for a research university, such as Dartmouth College, one of the eight universities in the Ivy League.
- In the United States, the undergraduate college of a university which also confers graduate degrees, such as Yale College, the undergraduate college within Yale University.
- Sarcelles (talk) 14:38, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- Yes, those are all uses of 'college' within higher education, most given with links through to the main articles on each form. What needs to be resolved? Robminchin (talk) 18:18, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- In my opinion, at the moment, all this information is buried in mush. The article would be much improved by a list, either in the lead, or near the start of the body, in a a format like Sarcelles has laid out above. Sorry, I'm not doing it! Masato.harada (talk) 08:49, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
- That's copied straight out of the article, at the top of the "higher education" subsection, which is at the top of the overview section, which is the second section, already near the top of the body. Most of the lead is similar content in prose form. Robminchin (talk) 16:20, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
- The article currently is a kind of expanded disambiguation. To be clear: This is a hotchpotch not conforming to the rules.
- A part of a collegiate university
- A liberal arts college
- A liberal arts division of a university whose undergraduate program does not otherwise follow a liberal arts model.
- An institute providing specialised training
- A Catholic higher education institute
- A research university

- What you are calling "a kind of expanded disambiguation" is what is known as a WP:Broad-concept article (see also WP:CONCEPTDAB). Such articles are entirely within the 'rules'. Robminchin (talk) 02:02, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
- Content on sixth-form college and other secondary edcuation should be reduced. Sarcelles (talk) 14:38, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
- There is one paragraph about sixth-form and further education, which seems appropriate. The secondary education section has a lot of country-specific stuff that should be at least moved into the country-specific sections. Robminchin (talk) 17:45, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
- Secondary education should be reduced greatly here. Sarcelles (talk) 20:04, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
