Potential issue in "50% within 50 years" claim and source?
[edit](Note: Apologies if any of this is ill-formatted; I am still in the process of reading the guides, but needed to get this out of my head before it fell out onto the floor. I am giving advance permission for experienced editors to correct the formatting here, as long as meaning is preserved.)
The sentence "Recent studies have suggested that up to 50% of species may go extinct in the next 50 years.[7]" in the second paragraph of the "Causes" section stuck me as odd for several reasons: First, I am uncertain on whether a source from 2004 (non-login-locked PDF link used) can still be described as "recent"; second, this is an extremely vague, black-and-white summary for such a nuanced and uncertain topic; and third, the article cited as a source itself cites two separate sources when stating "Up to 50% of species are predicted to be lost in the next 50 years (2, 3)." The rest of the article is devoted to a more specific topic, and so a different source may be more appropriate. Additionally, given how long it's been (especially combined with the changing nature of the situation), now may be a good time to update that source regardless. Alternatively, the predicted rate of all future extinctions could be a topic better suited for a broader article. Susurrusss (talk) 05:17, 24 May 2026 (UTC)
