Dual emergences of cicada broods

“The 13- and 17-year cicadas only emerge in the midwestern and eastern US in the same year every 221 years (13 × 17), with 2024 being the first such year since 1803.”

This statement ONLY applies to Broods XIX (13-yr) and XIII (17-year).

The last time two broods (a 13-yr and 17-yr) emerged simultaneously in 2015 when Broods XXIII and IV emerged together. Likewise, Broods IV and XIX emerged simultaneously in 1998.

In the next 30 years, various periodical cicada broods will emerge simultaneously in 2037, 2041, 2050, 2053, and 2054.

The next seven consecutive emergences of Brood XIX, the 13-year Southern Brood that emerged in 2024 will coincide with emergences of other 17-year broods between 2037 and 2115. Brood XIX won’t emerge as the sole brood emergence until 2128. And starting in 2041, Brood XXIII, the 13-year Mississippi Valley Brood, will also share eight successive emergences with other 17-year broods between 2041 to 2132. The next time two broods do emerge simultaneously will be in 2037 when Broods XIX and IX emerge in same year. KeystoneNHPF (talk) 17:04, 22 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
