Association with dog food

I remember an episode of Leave it to Beaver where Beaver kept asking to go to a fair, and one part of his spiel to convince his parents to take him to the fair is eating off the chuckwagon. Ward tells Beaver to ask June, and when he asks June, she says, "I think I can live on dog food for one night." I looked it up, and it could not have been the reference to the dog food, which was introduced in 1967. The show ended in 1963. No. The actors were using slang about the type of food one might get at a fair. From Chambers Slang Dictionary page 285:

• chuck n² 2 [mid-19C+] food.
• chuck wagon: [1950s-60s] a small restaurant of café.

and from page 410:

• dog food n¹ 1 [1940s-60s] (US) any form of canned meat. 2 [1970s] any food considered disgusting.
