Name: Chongar or Chonhar?

It depends on how you transliterate Ukrainian. Neither is "wrong" or "right", they are alternative transliterations,

The entity's not written about much in English, but as near as I can tell both are used. It's more or less a wash, but there's a slight tilt toward "Chongar", which is the original name of the article. So there's no reason to change the article name, but if you really wanted to, you'd need a Requested Move process (see WP:RM), rather than just a unilateral name change which is supposed to be for cases that are pretty much slam-dunk uncontroversial error fixes.

There is a ref to a source for "Chonhar", but it is one source, and being in a German publication is of little value for the English Wikipedia.

The Google Ngram show that, in the few books that mention the entity, "Chongar" is more used. Google Trends says that, of the few Google searches for the entity, "Chongar" is used a little more than "Chonhar", worldwide. OTOH, google hits are considered to be of very limited value if any, but FWIW "chonhar" does get 115,000 hits while "chongar" gets 71,000. I don't know if it's being an entity with a native non-English name affects this.

So, I'm reverting the name back to the one used by the original creator of the article, who presumably knew what she was doing. You could initiate a WP:RM, but why bother? Herostratus (talk) 14:07, 9 June 2026 (UTC)

Oh, wait, yeah, Chonhar is the Ukrainian name. It is true that Ukraine owns the Crimea legally, but in every other way (posession, demographics, history) it's Russian. So maybe it's a political football. Russia is ruthless invader power, apparently. But for our purposes here we don't care about that, and anyway we only care about what English sources say. • In a nutshell, Google Ngrams gives a considerable edge to "Chongar". Google Trends gives a 4-3 edge worldwide to "Chongar" as a search term. "Chongar" is the Russian name, "Chonhar" the Ukrainian, and since the Russians are brutal invaders and crypto-fascists we have sympathy for the Ukrainians and their language. But we don't consider such things; the WP:COMMONNAME in English is "Chongar", like it or not. Herostratus (talk) 15:36, 10 June 2026 (UTC)

Wouldn't need to moved; altho it makes sense to use the same name between articles, it's not really necessary. We have lots of such inconsistencies and I don't think it bothers readers that much. Also, FWIW, the original name of this article used "Chongar" and it was an unilateral move by somebody, which is only supposed to be used for like fixes. Those other articles used "Chonhar" from the start. Anyway, that's a separate issue. Herostratus (talk)
