Not slavery

Sometime, users keep putting back slavery-categories for this article. Perhaps because of the title of the article. This practice is indeed known in history as child auctions, but this was not slavery and should not be categorized as such. It was unfree labour and the article already has that category.--Aciram (talk) 16:41, 2 June 2021 (UTC)

I feel need to answer because I just did the same mistake. The reason might be the cultural difference in understanding what slavery is. As far as I know in Finland child auctions are widely referred as slavery (and the Finnish article has the slavery category) but I agree that it is the best choice not to classify child auctions as slavery in English Wikipedia. Complete rewrite of the article

Hello everyone,

I would like to briefly explain why I chose to rewrite this article in full, rather than making incremental edits.

The previous versions contained a mixture of unsourced statements, circular references (including citations to Wikipedia itself), and inconsistencies in terminology and scope. While these issues could in theory have been addressed piecemeal, I felt that a full rewrite was the clearest way to bring the article into line with Wikipedia’s sourcing and content policies, particularly WP:RS and WP:CIRCULAR, and to provide a coherent, well-structured overview of the topic.

I would like to emphasize that this rewrite is **not** intended as a criticism of the work of earlier contributors. On the contrary, their efforts helped establish the topic and pointed toward relevant literature, which I have drawn upon and replaced with directly cited secondary sources.

The new version is based exclusively on non-Wikipedia sources, primarily scholarly literature on poor relief, child welfare, and social history in Scandinavia and beyond. My goal was to improve clarity, verifiability, and neutrality while preserving the core subject matter.

I am very much open to feedback, corrections, and alternative interpretations, and I welcome any suggestions for improvement or additional reliable sources.
