New York or California?

This article states, "Others contend chef's salad is a product of early twentieth century, originating in either New York or California," but then goes on to detail the claims of several chefs in New York as the originators of this salad - whee does California come in? Is there not one example that can be cited of a California chef as the originator of the Chef Salad? If not, then why is California even mentioned here? Of course, as there are no citations anywhere anyway in this paragraph, suspect it falls under original research in any case...
