The Encyclopedia of New England says he set up the first outdoor gymnasium in the United States, while Appletons' says it was indoor. On reading the 1911 Britannica article on Jahn, I see it notes an outdoor gymnasium as an accomplishment, so I will choose outdoor for this article. Initially I chose indoor since that seemed more sensible for a New England climate, but maybe they already had indoor exercise facilities? So I'm a bit puzzled exactly what the innovation was. Perhaps it was certainly the first Jahn-style facility, but these two references seem to think indoor or outdoor was a significant feature as well. The Leonard reference clarifies things and identifies the Northampton facility as the first gymnasium in the United States, and describes it as an outdoor facility. Bob Burkhardt (talk) 16:37, 25 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
