The Meaning
[edit]Kemuel according to the hebrew lexicon means 'raised of God', while Samuel means 'His Name is El'. I am not a hebrew scholar, but these are the closest I could find. Are there any other keys used in translating biblical names? If yes, they should be mentioned as references in the article. My interest is because most names in the old testament seem to gain significance from their meaning, rather than their function as nouns. - Beta 09:35, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
- It differs on the interpretation I guess, for example, Chamuel is a variant of the name of the angel Camael, which means "He who sees God". It seems the general meaning is one who can see, observe or witness God, which would imply that the person is exalted, hence "raised". But I dunno, as I don't speak Hebrew, and my knowledge of it is restricted to what I have observed regarding angelic lore. But I'm not sure wether Chamuel can be used as a variant of Samuel or not, as I don't think that they use the same letters. Satanael 15:59, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
