Gay-Targeted Sting Controversy

[edit]

In 2020, the sheriff appears to have specifically targeted gay men for misdemeanor arrests after deputies propositioned gay men in a park, not for money but because the deputies asked for sex and said the gay men agreed. No sex took place. It was not for money. It was misdemeanor charges that were filed, not felony charges. The sheriff then sent the mug shots and personal information of the 11 men to social media sites.

The sheriff has never done the same with heterosexuals, except for prostitution (money changing hands).

The Tampa Bay news report source (one of several sources) is as follows: https://www.tampabay.com/news/hillsborough/2020/10/15/hillsboroughs-sheriff-publicized-a-sex-sting-did-it-target-gay-men/

To me, this is significant enough to be included on the article.

I added a two-sentence paragraph to the article's Career section, based on the source you provided. —ADavidB 17:42, 24 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I'm honestly not sure how to edit this in appropriately, but I know a fair number of wiki pages that link to websites or news articles also have a backup archive link? and I don't know about all the articles or sources, but the first one is stuck behind a paywall and I got a very good (images included) archive off the wayback machine from July 25, 2018 if that is something that should be added.

https://web.archive.org/web/20180625102407/http://www.tampabay.com/investigations/2018/06/21/new-sheriff-won-over-those-in-power-the-voters-they-dont-get-a-say/

Anyway, if this is not something that's necessary, carry on, I just thought I'd offer it for being edited in if that's appropriate, by someone who knows what they're doing, since I pulled it up for reference reasons. Thanks! ~2026-28654-89 (talk) 14:05, 12 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
