Complaint

[edit]

The advice about not using a catchall because of spamming is TOTALLY BOGUS. In fact, the MAIN REASON I use a catchall box is to DETER spam.

Here's how it works. Say I want to create an account at someecommercesite.com and they require an email address (who doesn't?) What am I to do? Shall I supply my thisismyemail@mydomain.com? If I do, what prevents someecommercesite from spamming my address in the future. But if I give them myname_somecommercesite@mydomain.com and THEN they spam me, I can easily determine who did the spamming and call them to complain about spamming or selling my address. In fact, INCLUDING the sender's name in the address I give them is a great DETERRENT for spammers, since they can see their own name in the address. I speak from experience -- using a catchall in this way cuts WAAAY down on spam.

What the writer of this article totally misses (and what most people who talk about catchall boxes miss) is what I just described. If you have a catchall box, you can give out ANY address (with your own domain), and if you do it wisely it simply lets you identify who the spammer is -- which is a HUGE step in the prevention of spam. Try it. You'll like it.Roricka (talk) 06:52, 9 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Politics

[edit]

I was referred to the catch-all page from the Popular Front page, indicating that this was used in a political context. No such context is mentioned in this article. Perhaps it should be expanded, to cover this meaning of the term?
