I am on the public relations team at CarMax and wanted to bring the following incorrect and/or outdated information to your attention and consideration for updating.

My proposed edits are as follows:

1.     In the Infobox, suggest updating. Bill Nash is no longer the CarMax President and CEO. The interim President and CEO is David McCreight.

Within the “Concept” section, the following statement is more than 20 years old. “On average, a CarMax store location employs 40 sales associates.” Propose removing as the company now has several different retail formats and the number of associates varies. 16. Within the “Competition” section, the M in CarMax is capitalized. The following sentence has the 'm' in lowercase. “With a significant shift in customer shopping habits, more online-only companies have worked to capture Carmax's share in the used vehicle market.”

17. Within the “Competition” section, suggest updating to reflect that CarMax no longer offers contactless curbside pickup. This offering was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has since been retired. The company does offer express pickup.

As I mentioned at my talk page, it can be more helpful if you rewrite the sections yourself. While you do have a conflict of interest, it is easier to discuss precise changes to an article rather then going line-by-line. Help:Editing explains how to do things such as add sources and formatting, which also work on a talk page! GGOTCC 02:13, 21 January 2026 (UTC)

I also took a brief look. I fully agree with you on #15, and removed the section completely. It added nothing of value to the article. Regarding 8, it may not make sense to have an exact number as locations open/close all the time. I believe "more than 250 locations" is better as it is accurate while future-proofing for small changes. What do you think? GGOTCC 02:17, 21 January 2026 (UTC)

The visual editor is the name of an interface that edits the articles (the other being the source editor). Since you are a paid editor with a COI, it would be best to make suggested edits or rewrite the sections and paste them here for others to review. GGOTCC 18:25, 20 February 2026 (UTC)

CarMax's headquarters is located in Richmond, Virginia. CarMax Auto Finance operates in Kennesaw, Georgia. There are more than 250 CarMax retail locations in 42 states as well as customer service centers (called Customer Experience Centers), and an Innovation Hub in Dallas, Texas.

Effective Mar. 16, 2026, CarMax appointed Keith Barr as President and CEO.

Concept

Circuit City executives developed the concept for CarMax under then-CEO Richard L. Sharp. It was developed for nearly a year in 1991, using the code name "Project X". It was also known as "Honest Rick's Used Cars" to those intimately involved in the skunk works team. The concept was first proposed by Ronald L. Moore of Richmond, Virginia, a consultant hired by Circuit City to evaluate possible business opportunities beyond the scope of their consumer electronics locations.

The business model began with no fees. However, the model was subsequently abandoned for the current business model after it was determined that customers were not concerned about paying transaction fees to purchase a vehicle.

A typical CarMax store is approximately 59,000 square feet (5,500 m²). Each car goes through a thorough 125-point inspection process, beyond any state-required inspections, and includes a 30-day warranty, three days to change the financing for free, and, 10-day money-back guarantee (reduced in 2024 from a 30-day money-back guarantee).

Circuit City issued the first CarMax stock in February 1997, when CarMax had seven locations. Initially, the stock was a tracking stock still under the umbrella of Circuit City. CarMax officially split from Circuit City as of October 1, 2002, when it was spun off as a stock dividend for Circuit City shareholders, with shares also issued to those holding CarMax tracking stock.

CarMax sold over 790,000 vehicles to consumers in fiscal year 2025 (March 1, 2024 – February 28, 2025). According to the CarMax fiscal year 2025 report released on April 11, 2025, the company opened five stores, one stand-alone auction facility, and one stand-alone reconditioning center. During fiscal year 2026, the company anticipates opening six stores as well as four stand-alone reconditioning/auction centers.

Competition

While CarMax is seen as the nation's largest used-car retailer, it has competition. With a significant shift in customer shopping habits, more online-only companies have worked to capture CarMax's share in the used vehicle market. CarMax unveiled an Omni-channel platform to allow customers to buy a car online, in-store, or any combination of these. They have provided opportunities for customers to choose vehicle delivery at their homes, express pickup, and more. In 2025, CarMax announced Offer Watch, a tool that helps customers track their car’s value over time and choose the right time to sell. These offerings directly compete with other home delivery-based options such as Carvana, CarGurus, and others.

CarMax is listed on Fortune's "100 Best Companies to Work For" list from 2005 to 2025, placing 69th in 2025.
