doesn't match my recollection, but I was on the East Coast

[edit]

I had VW Beetles and Ghias all through the 70s and 80s and bought the VW enthusiast magazines from California all the time. I have rebuilt and driven four air-cooled pre-1970 VWs and helped with many others. "The California Look" for VWs was well established by 1979 from my recollection, although I am admittedly older than dirt and I was thousands of miles from California at the time so don't take my memories as authoritative, merely as a data point. In those pre-Internet days we'd meet in parking lots or at somebody's dad's garage and pore over the old magazines and talk of the merits of lowering and chopping and debadging and whether it was better to fully restore the heater channels or just run some old hoover vacuum hose through the rusted out rocker panels etc. etc...  Preceding unsigned comment added by ~2026-23695-62 (talk) 14:49, 17 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
