[edit]Comments:
- "He also had several sisters, including Nuala, Mary and Margaret. He also had older half-siblings from his father's previous relationships, including Donal and Siobhán." - "He also" opens two consecutive sentences, I think it would read better if it was substituted in one of them, or possibly it could be omitted and the sentences reorganized.
- Updated
- "Hugh Roe was a key leader of the confederacy of Irish lords which opposed English rule during the Nine Years' War (1593–1603). Caffar and his brothers supported Hugh Roe during the war." - I recommend combining the two sentences as something like "Caffar and his brothers belonged to a confederacy of Irish lords, led in part by the eldest brother, Hugh Roe, which opposed English rule during the Nine Years' War (1593–1603).
- Updated
- "a force of shot" - Although it retains the atmosphere of the period, I think it would be clearer if you gave a short explanation in parentheses, or possibly substituted it with "a unit of firearm infantry" or "a unit of riflemen" (these are only suggestions, feel free to use your own alternatives).
- I have changed it to "a unit of firearm infantry"
- "where Spanish reinforcements had arrived." - I think it would be a good idea to point out that they were his allies and that he wasn't meeting them in battle. "Reinforcements just sounds a little ambiguous to me.
- Rewritten to "where Spanish forces had arrived to reinforce the confederacy"
- "Rory was created 1st Earl of Tyrconnell" - I think "given the title of" or "made" would be better than "created", what's your opinion?
- I have changed it to "created"
- "His six toes fulfiled a prophecy that such an O'Donnell "shall drive all the Englishmen out of Ireland". In 1608, British politician John Davies stated that the O'Donnell family had high hopes for the child "for they affirm that one of their saints of Tyrconnell hath prophesied that when such a one, being of the sept of O'Donnell, shall be born, he shall drive all the Englishmen out of Ireland"." - I think there is a bit of redundancy here with the repetition of "shall drive all the Englishmen out of Ireland".
- I have rewritten it to: "In 1608, British politician John Davies stated that the O'Donnell family had high hopes for the child, as "one of their saints of Tyrconnell" prophesied that a six-toed O'Donnell child "shall drive all the Englishmen out of Ireland"
- In "Marriage and children", I think the giving of both sons to foster families should be discussed (with sources), especially since it is referred to later. It will make the whole story more coherent.
- Updated
- "In 1607, Rory and his wartime ally Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, faced potential arrest for their involvement in treasonous activities; the earls and many of their relatives quietly fled to continental Europe." - Since the focus of the article is Caffar, I think Rory's relationship to him should be mentioned again "In 1607 Caffar's brother, Rory, and his..." or something similar. I'm not going to insist on it though.
- Done
- " Caffar (and presumably Rosa) joined the group that night, crossing the River Foyle and reaching Ramelton at daybreak the following day. They arrived at Rathmullan, a seaside village on Lough Swilly where Rory was waiting for them with a ship." - There is a gap in the journey, between Ramelton and Rathmullan. Maybe rephrase it as " and reaching Ramelton at daybreak the following day, later arriving at nearby Rathmullan, a seaside village on Lough Swilly where Rory was waiting for them with a ship."
- Updated
- The ship was driven by storms into port at Quillebeuf in Normandy. The émigrés travelled to the Spanish Netherlands..." - Again, there is a gap in the journey narrative, and there is no mention of the meeting with the Irish soldiers living in Flanders, mentioned later in the article. I think "The ship was driven by storms into port at Quillebeuf in Normandy, and were immediately diverted by the French to the court of the Archduke in Flanders. The émigrés travelled to the Spanish Netherlands, where they were met by prominent Irishmen who were living there..." or something similar. See Jerrold Casway. (1980-1981). Rosa O Dogherty: A Gaelic Woman. Seanchas Ardmhacha: Journal of the Armagh Diocesan Historical Society, 10(1), p. 48-49.
- I have updated this section - let me know if you think it works.
- "Dames Blanches of Leuven" - I think there should be mention that it was a convent. It's a shame there's no Wikipedia article about them.
- Updated
- "The nobles were granted a small monthly pension by Pope Paul V. They were displeased with their reduced lifestyles and quickly found themselves in debt." - I think a combined sentence reads better: The nobles were granted a small monthly pension by Pope Paul V, but they were displeased with their reduced lifestyles and quickly found themselves in debt.
- Done
- "Unfortunately, the men "all agreed that that particular place [was] one of the worst and most unhealthy for climate in all Italy". The marshlands were infested with mosquitos. - Combine.
- I have changed it to: "Unfortunately, the men "all agreed that that particular place [was] one of the worst and most unhealthy for climate in all Italy", as the marshlands were infested with mosquitos"
- "Rory caught a fever on 18 July, and Caffar caught the fever on the following Saturday. Rory died of fever on 28 July." - Combine and add a date for the Caffar's contraction of fever: Rory caught a fever on 18 July, Caffar caught the fever on the following Saturday, and Rory died on 28 July.
- Done
- Rosa remarried to the Irish soldier Owen Roe O'Neill, whom she had met in the Spanish Netherlands. - I think it's important to note that Owen was not merely a soldier but Captain Owen Roe O'Neill, (half) nephew of Hugh O'Neill Earl of Tyrone, and Rosa's own cousin. See Jerrold Casway. (1980-1981). Rosa O Dogherty: A Gaelic Woman. Seanchas Ardmhacha: Journal of the Armagh Diocesan Historical Society, 10(1), p. 49.
- Updated
- "Conn remained in Ireland and was raised in the household of Lord Deputy Henry Cary, 1st Viscount Falkland. He was also raised by Captain Basil Brooke at Donegal Castle." - There is some confusion here, how was he raised by both?
- Removed the Donegal Annual source as it is the less reliable source
- Caption for Rory's picture - "Caffar is buried next to his brother Rory O'Donnell, 1st Earl of Tyrconnell, in Rome." - I think a better caption would be "A depiction of Rory O'Donnell, 1st Earl of Tyrconnell and brother of Caffer, from a mural in the Pope Paul V Gallery of the Vatican Library."
- Done
- Caption for Hugh Roe's picture "A depiction of Hugh Roe O'Donnell, brother of Caffar, in the Kevin Barry Memorial Window by Harry Clarke Studios."
- Done
- "Ballindrait", "Lough Swilly", "Killaloe", "Irish annals" - I think all deserve links.
- Done
- In citation 17, I saw no mention of Rory, it is specifically about Hugh O'Neil, in 18 I saw no mention that Rory was made the 1st Earl of Tyrconnell.
- I have replaced the citations here.
