[edit]I don't think you can say "early" in the 17th century if the only links mentioned are to Cromwell and Charles II, who both feature in the middle and later parts of the century. The English usage certainly predates the 1668 group. It is used by Samuel Butler in the first canto of his poem Hudibras, written in the late 1650s and published shortly after the Restoration of Charles II. Interestingly, he rhymes it with "able", although I have usually heard it with the stress on the second syllable. Mandymet (talk) 05:13, 29 May 2026 (UTC)
