Name
[edit]I think the full name is Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number, so I redirected it here. Should the article be moved to the full name? The abbreviated name is far more common. -- Kjkolb 09:44, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
- Cas.org itself uses the registered trademark "CAS Registry Number®". I'd say keep it. The capitalization doesn't match though. However since it will usually be used descriptively in the articles and not as a proper noun, that seems fine too for our purposes. Femto 14:10, 19 December 2005 (UTC)

Categorizing chemical substances and providing structures as data files
[edit]- In my opinion all chemical substances should be provided as data files, preferably as (compressed) Chemical Markup Language and/or Chemical table files including all informations, like CAS, physicochemical data, etc.
- All those entries should be categorized, which will allow any mining scheme to collect informations from those files.

- Yes, all this means is that there are now CAS numbers that look like 1XXXXXXX-XX-X. I have already run across a few. 67.52.10.186 (talk) 04:13, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Technical Question
[edit]I attempted to simplify the article by merging some topics and redundancies.
Unfortunately WP doesnt clarify the meaning of all terms in the article-and I have limited technical knowledge.
I am uncertain whether "WP:Coordination complex" is generally equivalent to the CAS' coordination compound- as suggested by a previous editor.
But WP does not define "coordination compound". While it seems highly likely, I am uncertain whether the article's first sentence [which I constructed] is generally true.

So, doesn't Wikipedia (including Wikidata) contain more than 10,000 CASRNs already? (don't talk secrets) (talk) 11:53, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
- That statement does not rule out getting permission to use more than 10000 CAS numbers without a fee. It is probably debatable whether that provision could be legally enforced as well. In any case, at one point there were discussions between WikiProject Chemistry participants and Chemical Abstracts. Cost of Registering
[edit]I think it would be an important addition to find out the cost of obtaining a CAS number from an IUPAC named compound. Unless you are in the commercial or research fields, they are totally unhelpful about the costs. I think it also worth noting that there are many examples of compounds having more than 1 CAS number. "Phases" vs "different crystal structures" vs "narrowing of existing concepts"
[edit]The examples given are ice and carbon, with the distinction being stated as:
Different phases do not receive different CAS RNs (liquid water and ice both have 7732-18-5), but different crystal structures do (carbon in general is 7440-44-0, graphite is 7782-42-5 and diamond is 7782-40-3)
But ice does have different, specific crystal structures: ice II, etc. See the "crystal form" column at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phases_of_ice#Known_phases These are called "phases", maybe because they're formed by dipolar bonding rather than covalent?, but implying the distinction is whether there are "different crystal structures" seems misleading, indicating there are not different crystal structures for ice.
Maybe it should say "non-phasic crystal structures" or however one would phrase that meaning correctly. "crystal structures not caused by phase change" would not seem to work: one can both evaporate and condense (? I'm aware they crystalize, but I'm looking for a term for the phase change from gaseous to solid states only; "condense" feels liquidy. I guess that's not relevant, unless the change to crystal-structured water is not called crystalisation) diamonds under the right conditions, I understand. Does something need to be said about the context of phase change in the formation of crystals? I've looked through Phase and could not see anything that addresses this. Is it perhaps a matter of convention and historical accident? If so, that too should be clarified.
I'd be interested in pointers on where to look to clarify this for myself (including in Phase, I may have missed the relevant section).

- I think "crystal structures" is not the correct type of distinction for graphite vs diamond. They are different chemical substances—in this case, allotropes—and substances do not need to have a known crystal structure (or even be crystalline at all) in order to have a CASNo. DMacks (talk) 10:20, 13 May 2026 (UTC)
- OK. So I should find out why different forms of ice are not allotropes... it's because only elements form allotropes, not compounds. OK. So are there equivalents for compounds? Yes, at least polymorphism (typically used to refer to crystal polymorphism) is a non-equal superset of allotropes.
- So do you happen to know whether crystal polymorphs, typically (I'm supposing not), rarely or never get different CAS numbers?
- The crystal polymorphs article states
- For additional information about identifying polymorphism and distinguishing it from other phenomena, see the review by Brog et al.
- So I should go and obtain and read that, I think.
- Though the fact that some substances don't have crystal structure and thus are not distinguished by it does not by itself show that crystal structure cannot be used to distinguish substances that I can see?
