[edit]While CACNG2 is the name of the gene, the protein is referred to as stargazin or TARP gamma-2, and rather than being considered a classical calcium channel subunit, stargazin and its family of homologous proteins, including gamma-3, -4, -5, -7, and -8 are now considered to be auxiliary subunits of a glutamate-gated ion channel, the AMPA-type glutamate receptor, or AMPA receptor. Roger Nicoll and David Bredt at UCSF have done considerable work on this topic and have published numerous articles and reviews on the topic of the regulation of the trafficking and gating of AMPA receptors by members of this family of stargazin-like molecules, or TARPs (transmembrane AMPA-receptor regulatory proteins).
