Crews family name

I have seen several different family names that sound the same but are spelled differently. Having heard from the descendants of immigrants to the USA that officials have often changed the spelling of foreign names, according to the level of literacy of those officials, I wonder if the Crews name has any relation with the Spanish/Portuguese name "Cruz" (which means Cross) or the name "Cruise", as inthe case of the actor Tom Cruise.
