Heavier crown ethers from 2,3-butanediol

Hi. I've just noticed that this particular component that is produced by some microbes can be used as a monomer for creating heavier crown ethers (crown ethers that have methyl groups attached to them).

The science of phase-transfer catalysts is new, about half a century old. Since the metabolism of microbes requires the movement of ions around in order to control the pH and enable chemical reactions, it's possible that they "beat the humans to it" and already produce crown ethers. Microbes can produce proteins and enzymes, which are far more complex than crown ethers. Is there any research on this? Fredericomba (talk) 20:32, 26 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
