In a nutshell

[edit]

In the divinity school he had a crisis of faith (which is rather the rule than the exception). After he recovered from such crisis, he decided that the dogmas of the Catholic Church are literally true, not only theologically, but also historically.

Just read https://www.penguin.co.nz/books/the-case-for-jesus-9780770435486 and you will see he strongly deviates from mainstream Bible scholarship. He is not a revolutionary of this academic field, he is a reactionary.

All of Pitre's books, however, are published by Image Books, essentially an "in house" Catholic press, by Catholics for Catholics, which wouldn't rate as a source for scholarly information, except in rare instances.

"So, in this video, Dr. Brant Pitre goes back and provides a context for what the Kingdom of God looks like in Daniel and how Daniel predicted the precise time of the coming of this Divine Messiah which is precisely the time the Jesus steps on to the scene." . That is an often-repeated apologetic argument, but cuts no ice in the mainstream academia.

This source (which is not unfriendly to Pitre) calls one of his major works "apologetics". For those who are unacquainted with such terms, "apologetics" means it isn't WP:SCHOLARSHIP. The source actually loves his book, but in a odd way it is backstabbing him in respect to the mainstream academia. tgeorgescu (talk) 00:33, 8 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Tgeorgescu: The issue was already discussed on multiple occasions. Pitre is a scholar, who has published books with academic publishing houses such as Eerdmans and Mohr Siebeck; the fact that he "deviates from mainstream scholarship" is irrelevant, many renowned scholars have done that and still do; the fact that he is a "reactionary" is even more irrelevant. Also, Reddit is not a source, nor are Amazon reviews. Stop trying to have this page deleted and accept that it will continue to exist. Karma1998 (talk) 00:35, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Karma1998: I didn't say above that the page needs to be deleted. Wikipedia also has pages for a lot of WP:FRINGE peddlers. tgeorgescu (talk) 22:13, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Tgeorgescu Excellent. The discussion is therefore closed. Karma1998 (talk) 23:11, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
