Incomprehensible to the novice

This article needs to be simplified until it can understood by the average intelligent adult Math user. "The number of children at each node, the outdegree" does not answer the novice's questions: When does it branch? How do you know it is going to branch? And surely "children" needs further definition. If I did not have the principle in Math firmly in hand, I couldn't understand it from this article.
