Mistranslation

"Botafumeiro" does not mean Smoke belcher, as it was before stated on the introduction. Botar, in this case, is a verb which describes the action of expelling or emitting a certain substance. In this case it's smoke...so Smoke expeller would be more appropriate and it doesn't have the anatomical connotation "belch" has.

Music during botafumeiro swinging?

Does anyone know the name of the musical piece which is sung by a woman during the noon Mass for pilgrims in the Santiago Cathedral when the botafumeiro is being swung? I've had a lot of questions on this since I posted a video on YouTube under username cfpopsycle. Might be nice to add the name of the music to this site.Dave 03:00, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Questions

"certain important religious occasions" begs the question - "which ones ?".

How is it that the censer is made to swing higher and higher by only lengthening and shortening the rope ? Why would this not work without the inital push ? Some explanation of the principle at work would be useful, even if it's just a link to a page that explains the principle at work.

"Apparently at one time, the Botafumeiro was attached to the rope with a hook which sometimes became disconnected." - seems unsuitable style for an encyclopedia as it implies unreliable information - either it was, or it wasn't attached with a hook. Proposed correction: Catherine of Aragon section

The article currently states that Catherine of Aragon was "on a journey to marry the heir to the English throne in 1499" when she stopped at the cathedral. This framing is historically inaccurate and should be corrected.

The problem: Catherine did not depart Spain for England until 1501. She left Granada on 21 May 1501 and sailed from Laredo on 27 September 1501, arriving in Plymouth on 2 October 1501. She married Arthur, Prince of Wales, on 14 November 1501. In 1499 she was still living in Spain with no imminent departure planned.

What likely happened: The 1499 incident occurred on 25 July — the Feast of Saint James — when a mass was held in Catherine's honour at the cathedral. She was visiting Santiago de Compostela, not passing through en route to England.
