Haines: modernized index as "achievement" of the Wilson bibliographic method p 72 "the century's most valuable contribution to mechanical efficiency in bibliographical publishing" p. 71

"indispensable accompaniment", important for large libraries, used constantly by "students, teachers, editors, writers, nonprofessional readers" for "fact and opinion" p. 70
