It does NOT compete with FDG-PET/CT, ...
[edit]But instead with sodium fluoride PET. A bone scan is clearly less expensive than PET but it is WAY less sensitive as shown in the comparative example here, where one patient was scanned with sodium fluoride PET and HDP for a bone scan & SPECT.
