Background

When referencing the notion that the CIA's acts of sabotage upset the Republican-controlled Senate, I see a fallacy. The Democrats swept the Congressional elections in 1982, and I would find it hard to believe that a Republican Congress would be outraged with a Republican President. Background Item

Last paragraph unequivocally states that the secret diversion fo funds by Col. North received "explicit presidential approval". If that were a non-debatable fact, we would have been talking about the '86 Democratic Congress attempting to impeach Reagan. Impounding

An editor made an edit which was reverted, concerning "impoundment." Editors should be aware that impoundment has been around since Jefferson, though not used much until Franklin Roosevelt. Used a lot afterwards to derail projects the President disapproved of. In the continuing war between the two branches, this came to a head during the Nixon administration and the President lost this option for all time for all future presidents. Legislative Chronology Section

The legislative chronology section seems a little out of place and clunky. Is it a common part of entries concerning legislation? If not should it be removed and the information added in a more readable way?Sdr1453 (talk) 20:02, 27 September 2024 (UTC)

I've seen them be like that before (sometimes, just bullet points)....but if there is a way to make it more readible, please do so by all means.Rja13ww33 (talk) 14:30, 30 September 2024 (UTC)

Civil War (background)

The opening of the 'background' states: "During the early years of the Reagan administration, a civil war raged in Nicaragua..." This is false. There was no major civil war 'raging' at all. Most of the so-called 'Contras' were outside Nicaragua over the borders until Reagan took office and started supplying and training them. Once I've gathered the requisite references this false statement is going to be rectified. Daisne (talk) 21:17, 7 July 2025 (UTC)

The cited source (#5; which appears to be from a highly regarded academic press) makes it clear that there was fighting between government forces and rebels (soon to be organized under the banner of the "Contras") before the US intervened and before 1981. For example, on p.127 of that source it says:

"Soon after the revolution, however, opponents of the new government surfaced and took up arms. Supporters of the old order, particularly members of the former National Guard, comprised one of the main components of this anti-Sandinista front, which would come to be popularly known as the Contras. Yet it would be incorrect to characterize the Contras as simply a counterrevolutionary force comprised of right-wing Somoza supporters. As several scholars have noted (Brown 2001; Horton 1998), peasants in Nicaragua's rural highlands-including many who fought with the FSLN against the Somoza government-rose up in opposition to the Sandinistas’ radical reform agenda, particularly agricultural expropriation and redistribution. Moreover Nicaragua's indigenous Miskito population formed their own opposition groups in response to widespread discrimination and marginalization.

The first serious battle between the Sandinistas and the rebels (who had not yet organized under the “Contra” banner) was fought in the Nueva Segovia region in November 1979 when rebels attacked a military outpost outside the town of Quilali, located near the Honduran border (Brown 2001, 14). Although the Nicaraguan resistance would later benefit from extensive U.S. aid, these initial campaigns were fought without foreign help. Therefore, although the Contras were often accused of being a U.S. “mercenary” force, they originated independently of foreign assistance."

So while the there is probably some wiggle room here (is "raging" really accurate?)....it is inaccurate to say the soon-to-be Contras were outside of Nicaragua and didn't take up arms until they were supplied by outside sources. Rja13ww33 (talk) 23:43, 7 July 2025 (UTC)

Sorry but the source is RS. Just saying you think it is wrong is not enough. Even if you had another source, this one (considering its weight) would likely still have to be mentioned. Then I'll have to provide the correct evidential sources to counter the falsehoods. At that point you'll be able to retire yourself from this conversation. The problem with Wikipedia is that it wants certain sources with an orthodox bias, but not others. I'll be rewriting parts of this article to reflect the actual facts. Whatever you do, you will have to acknowledge all the RSs involved. And I just added 2 more. Ergo, if you do add sources that say something different....you will have to acknowledge that by saying some thing like: "Some sources put the start of the Contra War in 1979, while others say [whatever]."
