RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, July 25 (I.N.S.). — A dispatch from Bello Horizonte in the state of Minas Geraes announces the death there of Alberto Santos-Dumont, 59, famous aeronaut and father of modem dirigibles. He was born at Sao Paulo.

M. Blériot’s Cross-Channel Flight.

England is no longer an island! The magnificent cross-Channel flight by which M. Blériot won the Daily Mail prize will be marked with a white stone in the annals of aeronautics. The days when the world acclaimed Mr. Henry Farman’s 500-mètre flight as an epoch-making achievement are indeed far distant. This does not, of course, in the slightest degree belittle that achievement; in every branch of science there must be pioneers to lead the way. In this connection, M. Santos-Dumont must not be forgotten. The plucky little Brazilian is always to the fore when risks are to be run. He led the way in Europe with the steerable airship, and then with the aeroplane. To-day the Zeppelins, Parsevals, Lebaudys, Cléments, the Farmans, Blériots, Lathams, Paulhans and the whole legion of aviators are his disciples; of whom he established the apostolic succession. Once the idea is launched, he modestly steps aside and leaves the development to others. M. Blériot’s cross-Channel flight marks a fresh stage in this development. Up to the present, aviators had devoted themselves to the conquest of the air over terra firma. Now not even the sea forms a barrier to their daring. M. Blériot further accomplished his flight under unfavorable conditions. A few days ago he burnt his foot so badly as to be practically lame. But even this handicap did not deter him from seeking the adventure. His success is a double one. It is the triumph of the man and the triumph of the machine. Twelve months ago, the monoplane was regarded with something like contempt. From their superior elevation, biplanists and tripianists looked down on the partisans of the monoplane. M. Blériot had especially to suffer. He Avas “despised and rejected” of the aeroplane world. But he allowed no accident, no insuccess to discourage him. And now he has had his justification. His birdlike apparatus stands in the forefront of the world’s interest, and the Channel flight of yesterday marks a fresh stage in the conquest of the air.

SANTOS-DUMONT - A STORY OF FAILURE, ADVENTURE, AND TRIUMPH

IN 1898 the whole world heard that a Brazilian, a reputed millionaire, a young man named Alberto Santos-Dumont, was having a navigable balloon made in Paris. Those who can throw their memory back to that time will recollect that a paragraph in the newspapers concerning any proposal to build an airship was regarded as a mere curiosity not worth the passing thought of a busy man. Occasionally items of news concerning " a mad German " of the name of Zeppelin crept into English papers at times when news was scarce. These paragraphs did not, perhaps, interest many people. So when the name of Santos-Dumont was first seen in the newspapers it made no impression. Most people refused to believe that such a person existed, and those who did believe it concluded that he was mad.

To understand the man who initiated the modern airship movement in France, and, later, made the first officially observed aeroplane flight in Europe, we must briefly sketch his career.

Airships

With the development of the internal combustion engine the possibilities in linking the engine to flight were quickly recognised. The Brazilian Alberto Santos-Dumont had been experimenting with petrol engine driven airships since 1898. In 1900, Count von Zeppelin launched his first airship, the LZ1, powered by two Daimler engines. In light of the limitations of balloons, such experiments with dirigibles (being power steered or directional airships) interested those ‘air-minded’ individuals in the British Forces.

In January 1902 Col James Templer of the Balloon Section, Royal Engineers visited Santos-Dumont in Paris and compiled a report on his (non-rigid) airships. He recommended to the War Office that research should be undertaken. Consent was given to experiment with non-rigid airships, but progress was slow and the construction of Britain’s first airship, the 55,000 cubic feet ‘Nulli Secundus’ did not begin until 1904. It did not fly until 1907, seven years after the first Zeppelin flight.

Many comments on the balloon race of last Sunday appear in the English press, criticisms and prophecies both being indulged in.

"The “Outlook” remarks: “Although balloons, as we see, do not promise to solve the problem of human flight, they have done good service to mankind. Their military capabilities in the hands of a sensible War Office have been proved again and again. Such a machine as that of M. Santos-Dumont is pretty sure to be used in the next European war for reconnaissance, even if the temptation to utilize it as an aerial torpedo-boat be withstood at the bidding of The Hague convention."

A Bold Manoeuvre.

The difficulty of doing this is extreme; it requires astonishing skill to descend in so narrow a space. At this moment the aeronaut wheeled: around in circles, like an eagle about to pounce on its prey. At one instant it was feared that he was lost, for he passed within two metres of M. Deutsch's balloon-house, which blocks the entrance to the park on the south side. But he escaped the danger by a bold manoeuvre, that brought him exactly in front of his own construction, which he entered without waiting for the arrival of his workmen, who were coming un in an automobile carriage at express speed.

On this memorable day M. Santos-Dumont not only eclipsed his own successes, but left far behind everything that has been done in aeronautics up to the present day.

Once more he has presented the spectacle of a balloon really steerable, a sight which has been awaited ever since the days of Montgolfier, more than a century ago.

To-morrow (Friday), at two o'clock, should the atmospheric conditions be as favorable as they were to-day, the aeronaut will attempt, it is to be hoped with the success that everyone wishes, the official trial for the Grand Prize of the Aéro-Club, half of which (if he succeeds) he has promised to the poor of Paris, and the other half to the men whose devotion he will be happy to reward. M. Santos-Dumont, the Brazilian, who made the first public flights with a dirigible balloon, has accepted an invitation from the Aero Club of America to head a Pan-American committee to take charge of a movement to develop aeronautics in South and Central America.
