These graphs are terrible. Have a look at Moon and Spencer, "Field Theory Handbook" and you will see much better illustrations for these types of coordinate systems. I don't think you get a good feel of these coordinates by looking at this graph. I don't know how to generate better graphs. But there must be a better method.
