Climate denial
[edit]While he was with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review in the 2000s, he engaged in climate denial in articles such as this from 2008. There was a coordinated effort by climate deniers that started several years earlier with the publication of the fictional book State of Fear. Steigerwald was still defending climate denial as late as 2020. This pattern of coordination did not go unnoticed. Researchers Shaun W. Elsasser and Riley E. Dunlap made note of Steigerwald's climate denial in their 2012 article "Leading Voices in the Denier Choir: Conservative Columnists' Dismissal of Global Warming and Denigration of Climate Science" published in American Behavioral Scientist. I find it an interesting coincidence that Steigerwald is based in West Virginia and used to write for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. West Virginia was the largest producer of American bituminous coal and the largest share of U.S. coal exports, which was once connected to Pittsburgh steel which used West Virginia coal for coke in blast furnaces.
