The concluding portion of this synopsis is completely false. The secretary did not comply with her mother's wishes of secrecy as a result of threat. The reason for her inaction in informing appropriate authorities stemmed from her mother's promise that 'she will protect her and ensure such atrocities do not occur in future'. Thus the secretary did not believe that she would be raped further by whistle-blowing but that her stepfather's cruelty would cease through her 'forgiveness'. Sadly enough this was not case. No, that's wrong. The secretary says that she behaved herself and never told because she did not want to lose her other eye. It was not her mother's promises that stopped her from telling, since those promises clearly were empty. However, you're right that the mother did not explicitly threaten her.
