Capitalisation of the definite article in "The Neurosciences Institute" in prose
[edit]I have now BOLDly lowercased "The" in prose, so that it reads former senior fellow in theoretical neurobiology at the Neurosciences Institute in San Diego, California
, because we only capitalise the definite article in rare circumstances. Here the definite article is lowercased in prose, for example. TurboSuperA+(connect) 07:26, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- @2A02:1810:363D:6700:7059:7840:36BB:C959 You have reverted my change. Can you explain why? TurboSuperA+(connect) 09:33, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- See my other reply. Additionally, I put spaces between the section names since this is how Wikipedia generates them automatically, so I format them the same for consistency. 2A02:1810:363D:6700:7059:7840:36BB:C959 (talk) 11:51, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- MOS:THECAPS implies that "The" should be capitalized if it was part of the organization its name, which in this case it is, as seen in the sources of the article, as seen as in the title of the article, and as seen in the bolding of the name in the article. It isn't called "Neurosciences Institute", the institute is called "The Neurosciences Institute", as the name of the article suggests and earlier arguments.
- Also, a different example: "The" is part of the name of "The Heritage Foundation", and is treated as such when the article is linked. Finally, I put spaces between the section names since this is how Wikipedia generates them automatically, so I format them the same for consistency. 2A02:1810:363D:6700:7059:7840:36BB:C959 (talk) 11:49, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- MOS:THECAPS:
some idiomatic expressions, including the titles of artistic and academic works, should be quoted exactly, according to common usage.
It is difficult to find usage of "The Neurosciences Institute" when it isn't used as a title or at the beginning of a sentence. This source lowercases the definite article:and the Institute’s founder, Dr. Gerald M. Edelman, M.D., Ph.D., the Neurosciences Institute in La Jolla was designed as a “monastery for scientists.”
(emphasis mine) - Can you find some sources that capitalise the definite article in prose? TurboSuperA+(connect) 11:59, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- The article (so its Wikipedia page) includes "The" in the title and "The" is in bold text (it says "The Neurosciences Institute". Why would it be like that if it weren't part of the name? We also don't see Wikipedia titles like "The European Union", "The Netherlands". So this suggests since "The" is included, it is part of the name like in the case of The Heritage Foundation, for example.
- Other examples from MOS:THECAPS: "Correct (exception): public transport in The Hague". 2A02:1810:363D:6700:7059:7840:36BB:C959 (talk) 14:03, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
Why would it be like that if it weren't part of the name?
- Because in the first case it is the title and in the second case it is the first word of a sentence. We say "The Hague" because that is its widely accepted name, like The New York Times. I don't see evidence of such wide acceptance of "The Neurosciences Institute". TurboSuperA+(connect) 15:48, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- It is part of the official name, just like "The" in "The New York Times" is. You are also ignoring all other arguments made. 2A02:1810:363D:6700:6962:1774:68AE:2E13 (talk) 16:26, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
