[edit]There is a wonderful short tv piece called _Fight For The Title_, 1957. You can read about it here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0251084/
The story purports to be true, but I can't verify it. It tells about Benny Leonard staging a mock championship fight with a deluded young man who stylized himself "Kid Lombard". "Kid Lombard" can only think about becoming "the Champ". In the mock fight Benny Leonard allows himself to be KO'd so that Kid Lombard can realize his fantasy. The epilogue states that for the rest of Kid Lombard's life Benny paid his medical expenses, and wouldn't let anyone publish the story.
As I said, I can't verify the truth of this story. But, if it were true it might make a nice addition to this article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.241.44.43 (talk) 22:43, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
Dempsey, Houdini, Leonard
[edit]Does anyone know more about this picture?
I'm guessing early 1920s publicity event, but no further idea as to what, where or why. It's part of a series including pictures of the same men with Commissioner Daly, Jack Kearns, Billy Gibson. Any information more than welcome! -- Michel Vuijlsteke (talk) 12:46, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Hebrew name
[edit]Why is his Hebrew name included at the top of the article? No clue in the article itself. I assume it must have had some special significance in his life story? Could something about that be added? SergeWoodzing (talk) 14:45, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

Orphaned references in Benny Leonard
[edit]I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Benny Leonard's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Hi. I added this section in this edit and have been checking the wording against the cited sources. I found two places that should be improved/corrected for citation concerns.
Leonard was widely noted for his defensive skill, ring intelligence, speed, and counter-punching. He was known as an unusually cerebral boxer who used timing, feints, footwork, and tactical adjustments rather than relying only on aggression. The Jewish Book Council source supports Leonard's analytical approach, but the specific references to footwork, feints and timing come more directly from the next source that I might have placed too far in order to support the next passage.
I suggest to change it with: Leonard was known for his ring intelligence, speed and elusive style. (inline citation) Leonard was an analytical fighter who spent hours in the gym studying other boxers' movements, including their footwork, feints and timing. (inline citation)
Then, right below, I wrote: Hall of Fame trainer Ray Arcel, who worked with Leonard and later trained champions including Roberto Durán and Larry Holmes, regarded Leonard as the greatest fighter he had seen.
The cited source says Arcel called Leonard "the best I ever trained", but when discussing the greatest fighter he had seen pound-for-pound he named Leonard and Sugar Ray Robinson. So, now i see how the current wording makes the claim too absolute compared against the source.
I suggest: Hall of Fame trainer Ray Arcel, who trained Leonard, called him the best fighter he had trained and when discussing the greatest pound-for-pound boxer he had seen, placed Leonard alongside Sugar Ray Robinson.
The source remains unchanged. I previously put the citation here to cover both this and the above statements. Now I understand that is clearer to cite it twice. Kaspar-trout (talk) 09:28, 10 September 2026 (UTC)

Another place I would ask to correct is the wrong wording on my edit dated on April 26 2026.
I wrote: Leonard's fame extended both inside and outside the boxing ring. Boxing historian Mike Silver wrote that Benny Leonard was "the most famous Jewish person in America in the 1920s."
The quotation itself is supported, but it should match the source more closely because Silver didn't write it, he said it during a public event. I guess I just mixed up "said" and "wrote" because he'd actually written a book about Jewish boxers (sorry).
Here what I suggest: Leonard's fame extended both inside and outside the boxing ring. At a 2016 event at the Jewish Museum of Maryland, author Mike Silver described Benny Leonard as "the most famous Jewish person in America in the 1920s." (source). Thanks!
