Restructuring

Aside from needing citations for the direct quotes, some of the recent additions are out of chronological order and need to be better integrated into the article. Also, some of the language in the recent additions (not attributed as direct quotes) seems archaic--which could mean it may have been drawn a little too literally, without sufficient summarization, from the original sources.

don't quite understand this remark

OK, Andrew Johnson was impeached and went on trial in the Senate. I find this here on wikipedia in the article about Benjamin Wade:

"[he] was greatly criticized because of his unseemly interest in the outcome of the trial".

I don't quite understand "unseemly". I do know it raised eyebrows that, although the Chief Justice presided over the trial (there was no vice president, and the president pro tem would have presided over other Senate business), Benjamin Wade (the president pro tem) was participating as a Senator despite his interest in the trial outcome (under the laws of that time, he'd have replaced Johnson as President if the conviction had been successful). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.63.16.20 (talk) 22:42, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Also, I notice "Wade would have become acting president". I don't understand "acting", because wouldn't he have become President AND left his previous post vacant? John Tyler set precedent by becoming president (ceasing as vice president) when W.H. Harrison died. Carlm0404 (talk) 20:33, 8 July 2020 (UTC)
