Bengaline history

Using the Trove historical newspapers resource, I can see that Bengaline fabric is earliest mentioned there in 1857: "The woollen bengaline is a material of very general use for walking dresses ; the ground is plain ; the flounce a disposition, in quiet colours.""FASHIONS FOR DECEMBER". Retrieved 26 May 2022 – via National Library of Australia.{{cite news}}: CS1 maint: extra punctuation (link) There is a very large increase of citations in the 1890's, fading to the 1920's, with mention still occurring in the 1960's. Rayon was invented in 1893, so it would seem the term Bengaline for a fabric significantly predates the use for a cotton/rayon blend fabric. Brunswicknic (talk) 06:39, 26 May 2022 (UTC)

I noticed the conflicting statements in the text myself--it begins by stating the fabric is made of rayon and cotton, and the second sentence starts talking about it having some silk in. Haven't yet found a good source to clear this up; will do if I come across one. Snowgrouse (talk) 17:43, 27 September 2023 (UTC)
