Alumni Backlash to Name Change

[edit]

In August 2025, Virginia Wesleyan University announced that it would be renamed Batten University, effective July 1, 2026. The announcement triggered organized opposition from alumni and other stakeholders. Advocates of the original name launched an online petition titled “Stop the Renaming of Virginia Wesleyan University,” which by early September had collected nearly 6,000 signatures, according to the petition’s public page. Alumni groups also held public protests near campus, and the media reported on both the petition and the demonstrations. University officials acknowledged receipt of alumni feedback but confirmed that the name change decision remains final. ~2025-37418-38 (talk) 21:59, 29 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
