Please help by providing a better definition. This page was originally a redirection to cladistics, but the term doesn't even occur on that page! It may be more appropriate to write the definition there, but that page is already crowded.

Obviously, this term is also used in other context. Maybe this should become a disambiguation page. Sebastian 07:18, 2005 Feb 7 (UTC)

Moved the insulin information to its own page, Basal (medicine), since hundreds of articles link to this page and the majority of them mean "basal" in the phylogenetic context. Making this a disambiguation page would also work, but then all those links would have to be changed, right? Sheep81 00:43, 19 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
I've included a "this article is about" link to Basal (medicine) at the top. If "basal" is used for anything else, a "Basal (disambiguation)" article should be created, with a dab link from here. But since the term is used most commonly in the phylogenetic sense, this page doesn't need to be a disambiguation page. bcasterlinetalk 00:53, 19 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

"basal members of a group diverged earlier than a subgroup of others (or vice versa)." What is Basal? I'm still confused, A diverged earlier than B, or (vice versa), B diverged earlier than A?
