I moved this stub to article space because Brookie (food) was at AfD and we couldn't figure out where to redirect it. I've found multiple books about this type of cookie, so I'm confident I'll be able to expand this once I can access them. Valereee (talk) 12:30, 30 November 2025 (UTC)

I've gone to expand this with The Oxford Companion to Sugar and Sweets, but am pausing it after I realised just how contradictory sources are on this topic. The text I was getting ready to add:

In The Oxford Companion to Sugar and Sweets, food historian Janet Clarkson describes the bar cookie as not invented in one place or at one time, but rather naturally evolving from practices of baked goods prepared in trays. The earliest recipe definitely producing the modern bar cookie is identified by Jackson to 1924, when the Indiana Star published a recipe for a bar cookie flavored with peanuts in batter and frosting.

I then see Judith Hausman in the Companion's brownie entry describe them as bar cookies, and do the same in the Fig Newton entry, despite Clarkson explicitly dismissing Fig Newtons as a type of bar cookie. Rollinginhisgrave (talk | edits) 09:24, 31 January 2026 (UTC)

I'm not quite sure what you are saying, but it's often the case that the real world is messy. As Wikipedia it is not our job to resolve the messiness but rather to document it. If different reliable sources have different positions on an issue, we document what they say and describe the contradiction.--Srleffler (talk) 06:47, 1 February 2026 (UTC)

I'm not looking to resolve the messiness, but when sources are so contradictory, to avoid giving undue weight you need to go in and look at the literature as a whole and represent it.
