Union mine

To the best of my (admittedly limited) understanding, the Union mine doesn't exist at Bank Hall, only occurring to the west of the Deerplay Fault (essentially west of Burnley). Nadin calls it the Lower Mountain so I'm unsure where the NMRS DB gets this from. I think it is best to remove it.TiB chat 20:55, 10 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

J3Mrs The level of my understanding has increased and I was wrong! From Williamson BM63 "Upon the western edge of the coalfield the Union coal splits into the Upper Foot and Lower Mountain Coals along a line west of the approximately parallel and clearly related Deerplay Fault." I was confused by Hapton Valley (just to the west of the fault), and after I've looked at the related Thorney Bank I realise that Hapton only started working the Union coal in the 1950s after they tunnelled east trough the fault. So the Burnley side is Union and the Accrington side, Lower Mountain / Upper Foot. Nadin (who worked at Hapton presumably at that time) mentions using a coal plough to remove the Upper Foot coal prior to mining the (much more valuable) Lower Mountain coal so I now see why I was reading mentions of Lower Mountain on the Burnley side.
