Both purposeful backlash and unintended backlash due to wear
[edit]The lead currently says "backlash is purposeful clearance between mating components", but it should be adjusted to convey that backlash may be either purposeful or unintended and due to wear. For example, the cross-slide of an engine lathe may have started life with, say, 0.010" worth of (intended) backlash between its leadscrew and the nut; but after 50 years of service, the backlash has increased to, say, 0.080" worth, through the nut wearing out. — ¾-10 21:58, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Mathematics to Gear Tooth Backlash

thou as a unit
