Elements of awareness?

[edit]

Perhaps there should be some link to "situational awareness". Endsley's definition does unpack the notion, and perhaps is more broadly applicable to "awareness"?

Situation Awareness is the perception of the elements in the environment within a volume of time and space, the comprehension of their meaning, and the projection of their status in the near future (pp. 36). (Endsley, 1995, after Endsley, 1987, 1988).  Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.5.217.3 (talk) 01:10, 7 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm sick of the forced philosophy drama

[edit]

In my opinion, if people are forcing loops on wikipedia it ruins the point of the loops in general. It no longer becomes some naturally occurring phenomenon and becomes a man made slop fest. The goal of wikipedia is not to create fun loops to redirect people, it is to provide people with information on the matter at hand. To switch them around for "reading flow" is ludicrous, when you obviously have ulterior motives for the change. 2A00:23C8:C029:D501:CD97:FB07:6BB7:C90D (talk) 14:42, 27 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Unless you can provide some context for what you've written, your comment will be deleted. It makes no sense as a stand-alone comment, and it is unclear how it relates to this article. See WP:TALK. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 00:11, 28 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
I believe they are referring to a controversy in this article regarding the Wikipedia philosophy phenomenon. In 2024, a user switched the ordering of the Philosophy and Psychology links, breaking the phenomenon for a large amount of articles. See Getting to philosophy. You can see the discussion regarding this earlier in this talk page (not sure how to link to it, sorry). This was resolved a long time ago though, so I don't know why it's being brought up again. Sorry, just got mad I couldn't get to Philosophy from Nessie :) AYUDR123 (talk) 04:46, 4 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Grammatical flow edit?

[edit]

I personally find two consecutive sentences starting with 'it' to be annoying and have an odd flow. This scenario occurs at the beginning of the concept section, so I suggest changing the first two sentences into one, to read as such: "Awareness is a relative concept that may refer...", with the remainder remaining unchanged. I want to swap Psychology and Philosophy for Philosophy game.

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want made. Please detail the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. Umby 🌕🐶 (talk) 04:53, 4 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Opening without mentioning fields first?

[edit]

I did just redo the edit I think has worked well for the better part of a month, but wanted to put it here to give people a chance to discuss the page as it actually stands. It had been mentioned earlier with little engagement of that discussion but I believe awareness is a general enough concept that it makes sense for the first sentence to just say what it is and the fields of psychology and philosophy to be mentioned later in the article rather than in the first clause of the first sentence. GTP Loopbreaker (talk) 17:00, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello, GTP Loopbreaker. Thanks for starting this discussion! For now, I have put the initial paragraph back to how it looked before June 12, which appears to be the most recent consensus reached on this talk page as of comments from 15:29, 27 June 2024 (UTC), 11:03, 27 June 2024 (UTC), and others. At that time, multiple users noted that the disciplines should be mentioned, and that removing them had in the past been considered vandalism. There seems to have been no substantial discussion about this since 2024, but as I noted in my edit summary, I believe that's because a stable situation had been reached at that point, and no further discussion was necessary.
I recognize that both I and GTP Loopbreaker have now twice reverted this, bringing us close to edit war (WP:3RR) territory. I have no intention to start one, and I'm sure GTP Loopbreaker doesn't either. I hope others will comment here, so we can assess current community consensus. For reference, here are GTP Loopbreaker's and my edit summaries from 12 June and today, which I believe are part of the discussion, and the arguments should not get lost in the article's edit history:
GTP Loopbreaker at 23:50, 12 June 2026: As was mentioned on the talk page, most articles don't need to start with what academic fields their topic fits into and awareness is a basic enough concept that I don't think it needs to either.
Renerpho at 16:01, 2 July 2026: Manual revert the previous three edits. There does not seem to have been a consensus on the talk page to remove the discipline list; compare edits from 15:29, 27 June 2024 (UTC) and 11:03, 27 June 2024 (UTC), for example. This has been discussed quite a lot, and a stable situation had been reached.
GTP Loopbreaker at 16:56, 2 July 2026: TThat talk page has barely been edited in four months and it's legitimate to WP:BEBOLD. The fact that this edit stood for the better part of June suggests that most people didn't see a big problem with it and I genuinely believe for reasons unrelated to GTP that it's better to start with what awareness is and mention fields later. Discuss on talk page if you want but I believe this edit deserves a chance and that many people actually like it better
Renerpho at 17:04, 2 July 2026: Undid revision 1362226608 by GTP Loopbreaker (talk) The cycle is "BOLD, revert, discuss". I'm okay with discussing it again on the talk page. Your bold edit of June 12 was fine; but you re-reverting this before discussing it was not. I realize you're fond of the GTP game, but please don't led that cloud your judgement. Let's not start an edit war. Please tag me on the talk page.
That last edit coincided with GTP Loopbreaker opening this thread.
I urge people to avoid arguments that involve trying to restore the WP:GTP game. Let's discuss what is best for the Awareness article. Renerpho (talk) 17:21, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Re. your argument that awareness is a basic enough concept: The problem is that we start the article with a hat note:
We need to provide the context of this article as opposed to those other uses. The opening sentence "In psychology and philosophy, awareness is ..." does just that. Renerpho (talk) 17:31, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Re. The disambiguation page, I suggest actually reading it because most of what's listed on it is businesses named "Aware" and the remainder is this form of awareness just of specific things like brands or in specific situations like under anesthesia. Subjects where the base term is truly ambiguous typically have the field in parentheses in the page titles and this page doesn't so I think that's important context to consider. GTP Loopbreaker (talk) 20:13, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Rockstone35: In your edit summary Special:Diff/1362264191, you write that "Consensus was that philosophy was always first. Please don't disrupt this" -- and yet you remove the mention of philosophy altogether. May I ask what you're trying to achieve? Renerpho (talk) 21:23, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
By the way, I have no objection if you want to switch the order of psychology and philosophy. Renerpho (talk) 21:26, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Renerpho: my mistake. You're right, it'd be better to just reverse the order. -- RockstoneSend me a message! 22:27, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@GTP Loopbreaker: What do you think about reversing the order, like so, back to how it was before 2024? Renerpho (talk) 23:02, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Rockstone35: While I don't want to reopen the fights that took place on this talk page in May and June 2024, I believe the order of "perception" and "knowledge" was changed to its current one as a result of switching "philosophy" and "psychology". That makes sense, since philosophy pairs with knowledge, and psychology pairs with perception. Compare Special:Diff/1183777362 for what it looked like before then.
