Hollerith tabulating machines were used for indexing

Before digital computer Hollerith punched card tabulating machines were used with inverted indexes.

Also other cards with holes along their four edges, where used for indexing. Each hole represent one attribute yes/no, The holes were cutted opened for attribute "yes" in a way that inserting a long needle through the holes one can separate the card set with the attribute "no" held with the needle and the rest with attribute "yes", with the hole opened, stay in the box.
