Weird tautological opening sentence?
[edit]The opening sentence says: "Australians, colloquially known as Aussies (/ˈɒzi/), are citizens and nationals of the Commonwealth of Australia, although some dual citizens, expatriates and permanent residents may also claim Australian nationality."
(A) What's the difference between a citizen and a national?
(B) "although some dual citizens [and] expatriates...may also claim Australian nationality." ...Well, yeah obviously....because they are citizens. That's like saying 'Australian citizens are Australians, BUT Australian citizens are ALSO Australian.' Duh...
(C) "Permanent residents also claim Australian nationality"...umn...maybe? I feel that should be deleted if it doesnt have a citation? I dont know of anyone who claims to be Australian who isnt a citizen Apples&Manzanas (talk) 22:56, 10 November 2019 (UTC)

"Aussie" and "Australian" not the same meaning
[edit]There's a lot of talk in this article about waves of Asian immigration and so on in recent years to Australia, and how this is leading to economic and cultural intercourse with Asian nations, and that Asians are flourishing in Australia.
However in Australian English if you ask about a third party "Is he Aussie?", this is easily understood by Australian English speakers and a response might be "Chinese I think" or "Lebanese" or "Yeah he's Aussie". One can also think of the dichotomy in Australia of "Aussies vs Lebs", where there have been cultural tensions in the past such as the Cronulla Riots.
Ergo, to open this article with "Australians, colloquially known as Aussies" is not an accurate description of how those words are used in English, particularly Australian English. 61.69.197.171 (talk) 00:04, 17 March 2025 (UTC)
