Request to rename National Messaging System to AusAlert

Just would like to make an informal discussion to move this page to AusAlert as it is the official name and the name is concise as national messaging system isn't the most obvious. I will make the move if nobody responds or a majority consensus agrees by the 6th of March at 12:01 AM UTC Rwils32 (talk) 23:48, 1 March 2026 (UTC)

Possible source for legacy system decommission date

Once tested, the Emergency Alert SMS system will be discontinued.

I found a source that claims the Emergency Alert SMS system will be discontinued on July 2027, rather than immediately.

I didn't update the article as I am unfamiliar with Wikipedia's policies on verifying sources. If this claim is true, then the article should be updated.

Alternatively, should I change the "Once tested..." portion of the sentence to say "Eventually..." until there is more concrete information? Bbonacci (talk) 10:38, 8 July 2026 (UTC)

I would change it to the eventually option as it's common sense to not turn off a system right after it's replacement is implemented. Rwils32 (talk) 20:07, 8 July 2026 (UTC)

Register of usage? (Jul 2026)

Food for thought. Queensland Health questionably used the national system in October 2021 to advise people to get a vaccination, where there no four-hour or twenty-hour urgent timeframe (for example, given this is meant to be life-saving technology) and other media means were available. NEMA have not answered responses of maintaining a register, so validity of usage can be requested. NEMA has no legislation or policy preventing the Australian Tax Office and other non-emergency services using the system:

She [Emergency Management Minister Kristy McBain] also says the government does not want to see the system misused by other government agencies, such as the Australian Taxation Office, for other official purposes.

"At the end of the day, 99 per cent of the time states and territories will be using this system, and it will be the lead emergency agency of whatever the event is that will be sending out these notifications to advise people of what the incident is, how serious it is and where it's located and where you can go."

A table recording the dates, types of usage, and authorising agency may need to be created, unless there is a third-party site (like the Canadian one). NZ records notable ones. One wiki article (but can't remember who) has a table.–Q8682 (talk) 11:08, 27 July 2026 (UTC)
