BMI & area density?
[edit]Another IP editor added that BMI is in terms of area density. Really? BMI only takes into account one dimension, height, and does not account for different body shapes. Two people of the same height and weight, but with different widths (ie the thin one being very dense and muscular, the wider one being less dense) have different cross sections, different area densities, but the same BMI.--64.160.119.77 (talk) 17:21, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
The entry at BMI says that it's calculated by dividing mass (weight) by the square of height. There is no calculation (or even estimation) of the surface area of the body. I think it would be fine to leave in a reference to BMI explaining that it is *not* a measure of area density. The current statement appears to me to be false. - BMI is expressed in units of areal density, even though, of course, the area is nominal. --Macrakis (talk) 15:19, 11 November 2017 (UTC)
