Retirement

On 16 December 2009 trainer Greg Eurell retired Apache Cat after the horse sustained a leg fracture during the running of the 2009 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin racecourse, Hong Kong, China.

Reaction/Tribute Lunch

Upon learning of "The Cat's" retirement all of the thoroughbred racing world went into deep and sustained shock. Protesters in Sydney, shocked and despairing at Eurell's decision to retire the great mammal scaled the city's iconic Opera House and painted the words "No Cat" on the foremost sail.

Upon hearing the news on 17 December 2009 iconic racing identing and 12 time Melbourne Cup winning trainer Bart Cummings vowed to die an Apache Cat like blaze into his famously bushy eyebrows as a tribute.

Champion jockey, and regular Apache Cat rider, Damian Oliver indicated that without Apache Cat thoroughbred racing no longer held any appeal to him, and so he would retire from the sport and turn his attention to greyhound racing (renewing and reinvigorating his long-time campaign to mount racing greyhounds with human jockeys).

On 19 December 2009 a tribute lunch will be held in Brisbane to honour the great Apache Cat. Eurell and Oliver are both invited, and it is expected that Apache Cat himself may even make an appearance. Fellow champion thoroughbred Weekend Hussler will attend by video-link to wish his old sparring partner all the best in retirement.
