Notability

Avro is used in Apache Hadoop. If this page is to be deleted its contents should be moved into the Hadoop article. SteveLoughran (talk) 14:33, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

I do not see why this page should be deleted. It has good references for what it says and it has relevance. I would suggest to remove the notability-box. Just to add: I have just translated this article to German, because I consider it relevant enough to have a translation in de.wikipedia.org of it. --Karl Brodowsky (talk) 16:37, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Why the emphasis on Hadoop?

At this point in time, Avro seems to be its own Apache project separate from Hadoop. It doesn't have any dependencies on Hadoop, and I'm thinking of using it without Hadoop. I've been reading up quite a bit on Avro, Thrift, Protocol Buffers, and reading the description on this page , I felt like I was being misled. Here's a link to (a copy?) of the original Avro proposal, at that time intended as a sub-project of Hadoop: [] that also explains what is unique about Avro (named fields, self describing file format, etc.) and what makes it different from Thrift and Protocol Buffers. The discussion is quite interesting, not sure if this could be used as a reference in the article.

Is the support for the IDL really experimental?

There is nothing in the provided reference that hints that this functionality is experimental.
